Burundi's Voices of Fear

For more than three years, the East African nation of Burundi has been in renewed turmoil, triggered  by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to seek a third elective term. A seemingly domestic and controlled political conflict has spiraled into a protracted crisis characterized by torture, rape, murder, and other human rights abuses. And yet again, Burundi is a nation in flight, with thousands of its nationals brutalized out of the place they call home.

This report amplifies voices of some of the people dislocated by the Burundi crisis, either as refugees into Uganda, Rwanda or Tanzania, or as IDPs inside the country. Teams fromAtrocities Watch Africa visited the countries and listened as ordinary Burundians relived harrowing ordeals before and during their flight. What follows are their stories, in their own words
